Over the summer, I saw the same photos circulating online—two people caught in the middle of an affair, exposed at a concert, their faces plastered everywhere.
And just as quickly came the memes.
The jokes.
The “hot takes.”
The strangers overlaying their own captions onto a moment that, for someone else, is the worst day of their life.
I get it. It’s the internet. Commentary is normal. But I keep thinking…
Who’s Thinking About the Families?
Who’s thinking about the partner at home who just found out along with the rest of the world?
The kids who walked into school after their family life turned into content?
The people behind the headlines who never signed up for any of this?
What we scroll past so casually—the screenshots, the photos, the speculation—is someone else’s trauma unfolding in real time.
When Pain Becomes a Punchline
For the betrayed partner, it’s not just a story.
It’s shattered trust, public humiliation, and the kind of trauma that rearranges your body, mind, and sense of self.
And when social media turns that trauma into a punchline, it sends a loud message:
Your pain is entertainment. Your dignity is disposable.
This is Not a Joke
I’m not writing this to shame anyone for what they’ve posted or laughed at. I’m writing this because I’ve sat with many women picking up the pieces. I’ve held space for partners who can’t sleep, can’t eat, can’t breathe. I’ve experienced it myself.
I know what betrayal trauma actually does to a person and it is not a joke.
If You’ve Felt Heavy Watching It Unfold
If you’ve felt the weight of all the discomfort and the ache, you are not too sensitive. You are awake. You are empathetic. You’re seeing what so many others don’t want to see, which is behind every “story” is a real family, a real heart, a real life unraveling.
Let’s not forget that.
